The annual Great Barrier Island Wharf to Wharf began at Port FitzRoy wharf and finished at Tryphena wharf (40 km).  Participants experienced rugged tracks through some of the most unspoilt native forest left in New Zealand.  Reaching the height of 281 metres they had expansive views over white sandy beaches and across the ocean to an undisturbed horizon as well as green farmland, and holiday settlements dotted around beautiful harbours.

The first half is through old muddy forestry tracks, with half a dozen stream crossing and then along an old mining track skirting Te Ahumata, coming out on to the sealed road at Blind Bay for the second part. Still not easy because of the steep hills between there and the finish.

This year there were 100 participants, mountain biking, running or walking.
