Starting from Karpathos, we took the road along Pigadia Beach in the direction of Aperi. RIght after the beach the road rose steeply up the mountains in a series of narrow curves. We turned right at the first fork in direction of Achata Beach. The road down to the beach is a standard greek dirt road that is ideally suited to enduro and MTB.
Achata beach is pebble with umbrellas, beds and a taverna.

We continued our excursion in the direction of Aperi, Menetes and Arkasa on the other side of the island. The road was narrow, steep and hot. After passing through strong wind and clouds on the island mountains, we arrived on the western side of the island where the sea was rougher and more wavy.

The people of Karpathos converted to Christianity very early and filled the island wiht churches and chapels. You can view old frescos in several little chapels including St. Theodore at Aperi and St. Mamas near Menetes.

On this side of the island there are two villages Finiki, a small and quite port, and Arkasa with a nice sandy beach.
You can find here the acropolis of ancient Arkasa on the top of the hill. The Church of the Holy Wisdom on the shore is built on the site of a fifth-century basilica from which numerous significant mosaics have survived.
