This is the the most popular of several routes to climb Mt Pirongia. We did this trip in a long 11 hour day though we weren't hurrying.
There is a hut at the top if you wish to make this a two day trip.
The Wharauroa Track is quite rough underfoot and the part between Wharauroa and the top of Pirongia takes longer than you expect.
The Tirohanga track is similar but not quite as rough. Many people only go as far as Ruapane where they can get magnificent views of the Waikato Plains.
