Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf is well worth a visit. It is an open sanctuary for native plants and animals. All introduced pests have been elimainated from the island, including rats and mice. Hence the native birds, insects and reptiles that would normally be predated by these pests are abundant. Some species are very rare, like the Saddlebacks and Stitchbirds with are extinct on the mainland . One of the big arttractions are the extremely rare Takehe, a large goose like bird of which ony a few hundred individuals remain.

It is a 15 minute boat trip to the island and then there are many walks. I only had my GPS on some of the time, there are many more walks that you can do.
