A nice walk in the bushes near the Eeler mountain. In the year 1847 the family Vening Meinesz from Amsterdam bought some hundred acres of savage ground. To make the ground fertile Hendrik decided to make a water connection (Boksloot) in which small boats could deliver manure to his country estate. This menure came from the citizens of the capital of Overijssel: Zwolle. Nowadays the Boksloot has a function for managing the water supplies needed for the farmers in this area. The pond in the bush that was build by Hendrik Meinesz in 1865. Along the way we walk almost into the former sanatorium Kronnenzommer. Queen-mother Emma opened this facility in 1902 when there were 54 beds available for the pourer people who suffered from TBC (tuberculose). Nowadays it is a modern nursing home which has 260 beds available for the elderly people who need care. We pass the former vegetable gardens and watersupply of the facility. Further on the path is a crossroad. Now it is going uphill! At a certain point we leave the sandroad and follow a small path through the woods. After crossing the road we get to the part of the wood that the germans used as a launching site for their V2 rockets in Worldwar II. There were six or seven sites, hidden between the large trees, that fired off two to four of these rockets each day! A little further on the track we pass by the country estate Eelerberg. Felix Andries was the sun of the founder Hendrik Meinesz and used to live here. Starting in 1923 he conducted several global gravity surveys on voyages on submarines, particularly to and in the Indonesian Archipelago. Vening Meinesz stood at the threshold of modern Earth science. He was one of the founders of the Dutch counterpart of the National Science Foundation, and he was General Director of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) in de Bilt. By crossing another road we come at the end of the Boksloot. The walk continues along the water back to the parking place...
