Korfu in summer 2003 - Looking back at our trip to the island of Corfu I mainly remember one thing: Olives. The whole island is laced with olive trees. Many of them are quite old as can be seen on this foto:

Olive trees

Maybe this is the reason why Corfu is always green, even in the hot summer time. The island is beautiful. And there are many places worth visiting, particularly the island capital Kerkyra which we visited several times during our two weeks of holidays.

I should also mention the summer residence of the Austrian empress Elisabeth, also known as Sissi. The residence is called Achillion because Sissi was a fan of Achilles, the greek hero. The house and surroundings are in good shape.

And in the garden visitors have a great view at Kerkyra.
Finally, we made two trips to the north and the south of the small island. We conquered the northern half using a rented jeep. (The track recording is included in this file.) For the southern part we took the normally scheduled public-transit bus. (Travelling by bus is the cheapest way to move.)

Riding bicycle on Corfu:  During our travel preparation we planned to perfom a bicycle tour across the island. Some people say that this is possible. But we quickly discovered two reasons which prevented us from this adventure: 1.) It was much too warm for considerable physical efforts. 2.) Bicycle lanes seem to be unknown here. And the car drivers are not really amicable (politely expressed).

Altogether, Corfu is not cheap but worth a visit for a couple of weeks.

See fahrradspass.de for high resolution photographs.
